EDR vs XDR vs SIEM vs MDR

    AsterMind Team

These four acronyms describe overlapping parts of a security program. Three are technology products and one is a managed service. Understanding where each gets its evidence and who acts on it makes buying decisions much simpler.

    What Each One Is

    • EDR (Endpoint Detection and Response): Software agents on laptops and servers that record process, file and network activity, detect threats and allow responses such as isolating a device.
    • XDR (Extended Detection and Response): Extends EDR by correlating endpoint data with other sources — identity, email, cloud and network — usually within one vendor's ecosystem.
    • SIEM (Security Information and Event Management): A central platform that collects logs from many vendors and systems, stores them, runs correlation rules and supports search, compliance and reporting.
    • MDR (Managed Detection and Response): A service in which a provider's analysts monitor your environment, investigate alerts and respond, usually using their own or your EDR/XDR tooling.

    Common Questions

EDR vs XDR? XDR is EDR plus correlation across more data types. If your identity, email and endpoint tools come from one vendor, XDR can reduce integration work.

SIEM vs XDR? A SIEM is vendor-neutral and built for collection, retention and compliance. XDR is built for detection and response, typically within an ecosystem. Many organizations use both.

EDR vs MDR? EDR is a tool; MDR is people. Many MDR services operate an EDR on your behalf.

    Where an Investigation Platform Fits

EDR, XDR and SIEM are good at producing and storing alerts and logs. The work of turning those into an explained case — connecting entities, building a timeline, testing alternatives — still falls to analysts. An investigation platform sits between the data and the analyst, whether that analyst is in-house or at an MDR provider. See Automated Threat Investigation.

AsterMind's Cyber Security Platform is designed for this investigation layer. It complements rather than replaces detection tooling.

    Key Takeaways

    • EDR, XDR and SIEM are products; MDR is a service.
    • They differ in data sources, investigation ownership and operational burden.
    • Investigation is the layer that connects their evidence into decisions.
